Linda, Deputy Principal in an all-girls school
We’ve been using TTRS at our school for over two years now and we are impressed by the achievements of our students who have engaged with the programme. Touch-type Read and Spell has helped our girls develop excellent keyboarding skills in a relatively short period of time. This multi-sensory programme has a positive impact on their ability to spell accurately while also improving their keyboarding skills without them realising they are working on spelling.
We originally chose TTRS to help our learners with additional needs to strengthen their spelling and fine motor skills and prepare to type in state examinations, but now we see the programme as delivering life-long skills.
We introduce students to TTRS in small resource classes, then as they grow in confidence, they continue working on it independently both at school and at home. It’s a very easy program for students to manage and it facilitates staff in monitoring student progress easily.
One of our students with dyspraxia completed the TTRS course during her transition year - she was 15/16 years old. She spent 20 minutes a day working on her typing modules and that was enough to see results in speed and accuracy.
She was aware that she was becoming a proficient typist but she was oblivious to the fact that it was having such a positive effect on her spelling. When she finished the course she suddenly realised how far she’d come and how improved her spelling was and her confidence just soared.
It’s often recommended that learners who have additional needs use assistive technology, but they need good typing skills in order to make the most of their computers and tablets. TTRS helps learners feel more confident and prepared for exams, college coursework, and their future working lives!
